Eighty companies, over eighteen categories, made it to the finals of the Construction News Specialists Awards 2011. Along with these nominees, representatives from Construction News and the renowned industry figures who presented the awards, over six-hundred people attended the ceremony at the Hilton Hotel. Causeway joined them, for an exceptional evening.

Before the ceremony began, we were treated to a rousing speech by Chief Executive of the National Specialist Contractors' Council, Suzannah Nichol. Citing specialist contractors as “the most valuable assets of the construction industry”, she declared they should demand fairness of information and payment in return for their skills. This was something we could support, as we feel prompt 30-day payments are the very least that subcontractors should expect. Much to our surprise, the awards ceremony was conducted by stand-up comedian Alan Cochrane, who did a wonderful job of keeping things enjoyable throughout all eighteen categories. When it came to the award for the Concrete category, we were delighted when A J Morrisroe and Sons, a customer of ours, won! Before we retired to the charity casino, supplied by the construction industry’s charity for homeless people, Crash, we managed to catch a word with Dan Bannister, Head of Safety, Quality and Sustainability at Morrisroe:

“We were lucky enough to work on three prestigious projects this year; Birmingham Library, the new Macmillan Cancer Hospital in London and the Aquatic Centre at the Olympic Park. All these projects required a high quality and volume of concrete work which, when combined with substantial increases in revenue, safety and eco-friendliness, must have made us stand out in the category.”

All in all, the Specialists Awards was an insightful, eventful and thoroughly enjoyable evening. We very much look forward to the next Construction News event. t: +44 (0) 1628 552000 e: [email protected]
