Roads - and the infrastructure beneath them - lay the groundwork for a prosperous economy, smarter cities, and a well-connected future.

That said, there's currently a block in the way. The sheer volume of roadworks, both underway and planned, is presenting a crisis in coordination between the industry's key partners.

Our data shows that since 2018, there has been a 126% rise in telecommunications street works, 13% increase in roadwork duration, and 20% increase in low impact roadworks.

Additionally, while our data indicates roadworks are taking less time to complete,
the length of roadworks in line miles has grown by 35% since 2018 – suggesting a rise in larger, more disruptive projects.

A projected rise in road activity is posing significant concern for the industry. Notably, 62% of utility and local highway authority professionals have said that without greater industry collaboration, we are headed for a road and street work crisis by 2030.

The Road Ahead Report

In collaboration with ADEPT National Traffic Managers Forum (ADEPT), we've produced a report  which examines six years of road and street works, delving into the extraordinary rise in roadwork volume and duration, and assessing what utility organisations and highway authorities must do to successfully navigate the road ahead.

Alongside crucial insights from Mark Corbin, Chair of ADEPT, we have gathered quantitative and qualitative data from 135 professionals working in utility organisations and 284 professionals working in highway authorities.

"This document is more than a report, it's a call for a holistic transformation in how we as a sector behave, collaborate, communicate and radically change the prevailing culture."

Mark Corbin, Chair of ADEPT

We explore how planning and productivity are in conflict; key trends impacting the types of works happenings; the communication challenges facing utilities and highway authorities; and the urgent need for a collaborative, centralised solution to drive a real change in working culture across the industry.

Download the report to find out how communication and coordination, facilitated by digital collaboration tools, can help stakeholders successfully navigate the road ahead.
